Old Soul Cowgirl

The Old Soul Cowgirl & Huckleberry - a new series of videos showing the view from the rider's perspective as I work my 2020 APHA / AQHA gelding! Join me as I take you along for the ride with my new companion, MDR Comin In Hott - AKA Huckleberry. In this series of videos, experience the fun and frustration of working with young horses as Huck and I strive to excel.

Throughout this exhilarating journey, I'll share my passion for horses and the joy they bring into our lives. From working on the ground and in the saddle, I focus on the intricacies of communication between rider and steed. Hopefully, you'll gain insights into the world of horses that will leave you happy and relaxed. Or just enjoy the view and listen to the music.

Huckleberry has some pretty impressive bloodlines. His sire is MDR Impulsified (https://www.spperformancehorses.com/impulsified), a Color Breed Congress Champion and
AQHA, APHA, & PtHA Point Earner! His dam is Chandra (TB) who is a granddaughter of 'Unbridled's Song' and great-granddaughter of Triple Crown Winner 'Affirmed"!

Top Tips

Horses are incredibly communicative animals. They will tell you what they’re thinking, what they’re planning, and how they’re feeling. By paying close attention to their attitude, actions, and body posture, especially their ears, you can gain invaluable insights into their state of mind. This understanding can make your rides smoother and safer, and your bond with your horse stronger.

pay attention

The body posture of a horse is a direct reflection of their feelings and readiness to act. A horse with a raised head and stiff legs might be feeling anxious or threatened, while a horse that is relaxed and standing with one hind leg cocked is likely feeling at ease. Pay attention to the overall alignment of their body, including their head, neck, back, and legs, as this can help you understand their physical and emotional state.

Ears are one of the most expressive parts of a horse's body. They can tell you a lot about where your horse’s attention is focused and how they are feeling. Ears that are pricked forward indicate interest or curiosity. Ears that are pinned back may suggest irritation or aggression. Constantly swiveling ears could mean that your horse is on high alert and is processing multiple stimuli. By regularly monitoring your horse’s ears, you can stay attuned to their thoughts and feelings.
